Four Nigerian researchers have been named among Africa’s top 100 scientists.

This prestigious recognition highlights their trailblazing contributions to research and innovation, solidifying Nigeria’s position as a hub for scientific excellence.

The distinguished scientists have made significant strides in various fields, including medicine, engineering, and environmental studies, demonstrating Nigeria’s growing influence in African and global scientific circles.

Meet the four Nigerian scientists featured in the esteemed list:

  1. Oye Gureje: A renowned psychiatrist, ranks among the top 100 African scientists in the 2025 AD Scientific Index. His groundbreaking research in mental health, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, has earned him recognition as one of Nigeria’s leading scholars
  2. Shafiu Mohammed: As a leading expert in public health, Mohammed’s extensive research in global health, epidemiology, health systems, and policy has had a profound impact on healthcare.

He’s known for his contributions to health financing, quality of care, and healthcare evaluation, cementing his reputation as a leading Nigerian academic at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria ΒΉ.

  1. Mayowa Owolabi: This celebrated neurologist and Dean of the Faculty of Clinical Sciences at the University of Ibadan has pioneered stroke research, focusing on low- and middle-income countries. His work on genetic and environmental factors influencing stroke in Africa and development of the Afrocentric stroke riskometer has significantly advanced global health, with over 320 peer-reviewed publications to his name.

Olayinka Stephen Ilesanmi: A leading public health and epidemiology expert from the University of Ibadan, Ilesanmi’s groundbreaking research in community health and infectious diseases has earned him international acclaim. His work spans health policy, epidemiology, and medical statistics, making significant contributions to advancing public health across Africa.
