Federal Ministry of Education disavows controversial textbook authored by Tony and Ijeoma Duru with “Distorted” Yoruba history

The Federal Ministry of Education has clarified that a history textbook containing alleged inaccuracies about the founding of Ile-Ife is not among the instructional materials approved for use in public basic education institutions across Nigeria.

The clarification came in response to a petition titled “Petition to Defend Yoruba History from Ethnic Distortion in Nigerian Textbooks,” submitted by the Concerned Citizens of Yoruba Origin and Supporters of Truth.

According to the Ministry, the textbook in question, authored by Tony and Ijeoma Duru and published by Tones Publishers, contains claims that have been described as “misleading and potentially harmful to national unity.” The Ministry emphasized that it did not author, commission, or approve the publication and is not affiliated with it in any way.

In a press release signed by Boriowo Folasade, Director of Press and Public Relations, the Ministry stated:

“The Ministry appreciates the vigilance and concern of stakeholders regarding the potential of such content to misinform learners and provoke ethnic tension.

“While these concerns are valid, it is essential to note that the Ministry is not responsible for materials that fall outside its regulatory framework.”

The Ministry assured that instructional materials officially endorsed by it are carefully curated to meet national education standards, developed to support effective learning in public schools, promote literacy, and ensure inclusive, equitable access to quality education throughout Nigeria.

However, given the sensitivity of the matter and its implications for education, cultural identity, and national cohesion, the Ministry has pledged to work closely with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and other relevant agencies to thoroughly investigate the issue.

“We will take all necessary steps to address the anomalies identified and ensure a fair and timely resolution that respects historical truth and promotes unity,” the Ministry stated.

The Ministry reiterated its commitment to providing quality, inclusive, and culturally respectful education that fosters peace, understanding, and national development.

As the investigation unfolds, stakeholders are hopeful that the matter will be resolved in a manner that promotes national unity and respect for cultural diversity.

The Ministry’s response has been welcomed by stakeholders who are eager to see an end to the controversy surrounding the textbook..
