Afenifere, a prominent Yoruba socio-cultural organisation in Nigeria, has called for restructuring and the establishment of state and community policing in the country.

This appeal was made in commemoration of June 12, a day that symbolizes the nation’s quest for democracy, unity, and progress.

In a statement released to mark the 2025 Democracy Day, Afenifere emphasized the significance of June 12, noting that it serves as a reminder of the power of unity and collective effort in overcoming challenges.

According to the group, the essence of June 12 is to remind Nigerians that despite their differences, they can work together to tackle the nation’s challenges and build a better country.

“Nigeria’s democracy and development require collective effort and patriotic leadership,” Afenifere said.

The group believes that with the right attitude, visionary leadership, and patriotic citizens, Nigeria can achieve its full potential and become a prosperous nation.

The group’s leader expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, stating: “I wish to state that the main essence of June 12 celebration is to remind us that we, as Nigerians, irrespective of our diverse political, ethnic or religious inclinations, can work together in tackling the challenges confronting us, with a view to having a country of our dreams.”

He further emphasized the importance of collective effort in nation-building, saying: “Once again, it needs to be emphasised that Nigeria’s democracy and development, is a work in progress requiring all hands to be on deck.

“I’m confident that with the right attitude, visionary leadership and patriotic citizenry, we shall get to the Promised Land.”

Afenifere’s call for restructuring and community policing is aimed at addressing the country’s security challenges and promoting more effective governance.

The group believes that these reforms will help to create a more stable and prosperous Nigeria, where citizens can live without fear and enjoy the benefits of democracy.

As Nigerians celebrate Democracy Day, Afenifere’s message serves as a reminder of the importance of unity, collective effort, and patriotic leadership in building a better future for the nation.

The group extended warm wishes to Nigerians on this occasion, expressing hope for a brighter future for the country.

“We wish to extend our warmest wishes to all Nigerians on this occasion of observing 2025 Democracy Day.

“May we continue to work together towards building a nation that is just, equitable, and prosperous for all,” the statement concluded.
