The Ekiti State government has commenced the enforcement of the law which prohibits cattle and other ruminants from grazing in Ekiti State.
The development which was disclosed during a Peace Committee meeting in Ado-Ekiti, emphatically prohibits cattle grazing at night, wielding of firearms or other offensive weapons by herdsmen, and destruction of properties and farmlands by cattle.
This was made known in a post shared on the X handle of the Ekiti State government on Wednesday, March 20.
It partly reads: “Ekiti State Government has commenced the enforcement of the Prohibition of Cattle and Other Ruminants Grazing in Ekiti State Law, 2016.
“Among other pertinent provisions, the Law emphatically prohibits cattle grazing at night, the wielding of firearms or other offensive weapons by herdsmen, and the destruction of properties and farmlands by cattle.
“The Chairman of the Farmers/Herders Peace Committee in Ekiti State, retired Brigadier-General Ebenezer Ogundana disclosed this development during a Peace Committee meeting in Ado-Ekiti.
“While stressing the need for cooperation and peaceful co-existence of all stakeholders in the state, he also emphasised that the state would not hesitate to punish any offenders contravening the law.
“This is due to the resolve of the state to curb any form of threat of insecurity and wanton damage of farms which could demoralise crop farmers and cause food shortage.”
