French President, Emmanuel Macron, on Saturday, expressed dismay at the earthquake in Morocco, which has killed at least 600 people.

According to Macron who described the quake as devastating, France was ready to offer relief efforts.

β€œWe are all devastated after the terrible earthquake in Morocco,” Macron said on X, formerly known as Twitter, while onboard a flight to the G20 summit in India.

β€œFrance stands ready to help with first aid”, he added.

AFP earlier reported that a powerful earthquake that shook Morocco killed more than 600 people, sending terrified residents fleeing their homes in the middle of the night.

The 6.8-magnitude quake struck a mountainous area 72 kilometres (45 miles) South-West of tourist hotspot Marrakesh at 11:11 pm (2211 GMT) Friday, the US Geological Survey reported.

Strong tremors were also felt in the coastal cities of Rabat, Casablanca and Essaouira.

Moroccan media reported it was the most powerful quake to ever hit the country.
