A Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to life imprisonment after convicting him on multiple terrorism charges.

The judgment was delivered on Thursday by Justice James Omotosho, who held that the prosecution had proven several counts of the seven-count charge brought against the separatist leader.

Kanu was handed life imprisonment on Counts 4, 5 and 6, which bordered on terrorism-related offences linked to his broadcasts and directives issued through Radio Biafra. The court also sentenced him to 20 years’ imprisonment on Count 2. The sentences are to run concurrently.

Justice Omotosho noted that although the law provides for the death penalty for some of the offences, the court opted for life imprisonment β€œin the interest of justice.”

Kanu is to remain in custody and will serve his sentence in a correctional facility under strict supervision.
