The Anambra State Police Command has uncovered a child trafficking syndicate and rescued a one-week-old baby from suspected traffickers.

Police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the development in a statement on Wednesday, revealing that operatives attached to the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) acted on credible intelligence to dismantle the ring.

According to Ikenga, the suspects were apprehended in a coordinated operation in Awka, where the infant was recovered safely. He added that preliminary investigations indicated the baby had been sold shortly after birth, with the suspects already making confessional statements.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, commended the team for their swift action and directed the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to intensify efforts to trace other members of the syndicate.

Ikenga noted that the rescued baby is currently receiving care, while the investigation continues to ensure justice is served.
