UK Rejects Nigeria’s Request to Transfer Ike Ekweremadu to Serve Sentence at Home

The British government has declined Nigeria’s request to transfer former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, to Nigeria to complete his prison sentence.
Ekweremadu is currently serving a nine-year, eight-month jail term in the United Kingdom after he was convicted in 2023 for conspiring to harvest the kidney of a young man, an offence prosecuted under the UK’s modern slavery laws.
Sources said a recent diplomatic engagement between Nigerian officials and the UK Ministry of Justice focused on the possibility of repatriating the former lawmaker to a Nigerian correctional facility. The Nigerian delegation, led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, formally appealed for his transfer.
However, British authorities turned down the request, insisting that Ekweremadu would continue to serve his sentence in the UK under existing legal and penal arrangements.
