The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has directed 20 universities across Nigeria to issue 14-day ultimatums to their respective authorities over what the union described as the “haphazard implementation” of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement.
The union warned that the affected universities could embark on an indefinite strike if the outstanding issues are not resolved within the 14-day period.
ASUU President, Christopher Piwuna, disclosed this in a statement following the union’s National Executive Council meeting held at the University of Abuja on August 8 and 9, 2026.
The union said the decision followed concerns over the slow and uneven implementation of the agreement, including issues relating to funding and other commitments contained in the deal.
The affected institutions include Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, Oyo; University of Medical Sciences, Ondo; Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba; Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma; Kaduna State University; Gombe State University; Plateau State University, Bokkos; Nasarawa State University, Keffi; and Taraba State University, Jalingo.
Others are Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai; Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa; Abia State University, Uturu; Kano State University of Science and Technology, Wudil; Northwest University, Kano; Enugu State University of Science and Technology; Imo State University; Niger Delta University; University of Africa, Toru-Orua; and Bayelsa Medical University.
ASUU’s latest position puts the affected institutions on strike alert, with the possibility of an indefinite industrial action if the government fails to address the union’s concerns within the stipulated period.
