The Lagos State Government on Thursday unveiled a fully automated platform for issuing indigeneship certificates, a move officials say will modernise verification processes and improve access to state services.
The launch, held at the Alausa Secretariat in Ikeja, was organised by the Ministry of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations under the theme “Lagos State Indigeneship Certificate Automation: A Step Towards Modernisation.”
Commissioner for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, Olugbenga Oyerinde—represented by Dr. Funmilayo Sokunbi—said the initiative would simplify access to government services for indigenous Lagos residents and provide long-term benefits for future generations. He added that the digital system is also expected to boost investor confidence in the state.
Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Sesan Ogundeko, represented by Olawale Abdullah, described the indigeneship certificate as a vital planning tool. He said the automated process will help identify Lagos indigenes across secondary schools and higher institutions nationwide.
“We decided to streamline and automate the process to make it easier for any candidate to register and obtain the certificate. The process starts today and will continue,” he said.
Chairman of the House Committee on Special Duties, Olawale Ade-Sulaiman, noted that many Lagos indigenes no longer know their ancestral roots. He said the digital certificate will aid the government in identifying genuine Lagosians.
Technology partners Qista Technologies said the new system includes barcode verification and other security features to curb fake documentation. They added that the platform is mobile-friendly and designed to enhance transparency and efficient identification.
