HOUSE OF REPS RAISES ALARM OVER TERRORISTS’ THREAT TO BOMB NATIONAL ASSEMBLY

The House of Representatives has expressed concern over alleged threats by terrorist groups to bomb the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, warning that such an incident could disrupt legislative activities and endanger Nigeria’s democratic stability.

Chairman of the House Committee on Internal Security, Hon. Garba Muhammad, disclosed this on Tuesday during a public hearing on a bill proposing the establishment of a Legislative Security Directorate, a specialized agency to coordinate and manage security operations within the parliament.

Muhammad, while addressing stakeholders, revealed that intelligence reports had indicated credible threats against the National Assembly, including plans by terrorists to attack the complex.

“We have received threats from terrorists to bomb the National Assembly Complex and threats from protesters to lock up the National Assembly,” he said.
“Lawmakers are often exposed to threats from constituents and individuals who gain easy access to their offices without any prior appointment.”

He also highlighted recurring security concerns within the complex such as theft of vehicles and motorcycles, vandalism, fake identification badges, and infiltration by unauthorized persons.

The lawmaker emphasized the need for urgent reforms in the National Assembly’s security system, stressing that the current arrangement leaves the legislative arm vulnerable to serious internal and external threats.
