SSANU, NASU to Hold Nationwide Protest October 9 Over Unmet Demands

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) have announced plans to embark on a one-day nationwide protest on Thursday, October 9, 2025, to demand the implementation of their outstanding agreements with the Federal Government.

The two unions, under the umbrella of the Joint Action Committee (JAC), said the protest became necessary following the government’s failure to address long-standing issues despite repeated ultimatums.

In a circular dated October 6, 2025, and jointly signed by NASU General Secretary, Prince Peters Adeyemi, and SSANU National President, Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim, JAC directed all branches in universities and inter-university centres to hold joint congresses on Wednesday to mobilize members for the protest.
The circular, titled “Commencement of Protest Actions,” instructed members to stage peaceful marches, display placards highlighting their grievances, and hold press briefings to draw public attention to their plight.

Among the major issues listed by the unions are the alleged unfair disbursement of the ₦50 billion Earned Allowances, delays in renegotiating the 2009 FGN/NASU-SSANU Agreement, non-payment of two months’ salaries, unpaid arrears of 25 and 35 percent salary increments, and withheld third-party deductions for May and June 2022.

The planned protest follows a JAC meeting held on October 6, where the committee reviewed the Federal Government’s response to previous demands and expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of progress.
