Tinubu Seeks Senate Confirmation of Abdullahi Ramat as NERC Chairman

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has forwarded a letter to the Senate, seeking the confirmation of Engr. Abdullahi Ramat as the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

The letter was read during plenary on Tuesday by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, as lawmakers resumed from their annual recess.

In the correspondence, President Tinubu requested the Senate to give Ramat’s nomination due consideration and confirmation in line with Section 34 of the Electric Power Sector Reform Act, 2005, which outlines the process for appointing the head of the Commission.

The NERC, which serves as the regulatory authority for Nigeria’s electricity supply industry, is responsible for licensing operators, setting tariffs, and ensuring efficient service delivery across the power sector.
The Senate had been on annual recess since July 24, a legislative tradition that allows members to combine national duties with constituency engagements and personal commitments.

The screening and confirmation of Ramat are expected to be referred to the Senate Committee on Power for further legislative action in the coming days.
