Vice President Kashim Shettima has urged for greater and fairer representation of African nations in the United Nations Security Council, stressing Nigeria’s central role on the continent.
In a side interview during the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Shettima said, “For the sake of equity, justice, and fairness, Africa should have fairer representation in the UN Security Council. Naturally, when you talk of Africa, Nigeria is Africa, and Africa is Nigeria.”
Shettima, representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, highlighted Nigeria’s long-standing contributions to peacekeeping and regional diplomacy as justification for stronger influence in the UN decision-making process.
The statement comes as African nations continue to advocate for permanent membership or increased influence in the Security Council, historically dominated by the United States, United Kingdom, France, Russia, and China.
The Nigerian delegation is actively engaging in high-level debates, bilateral meetings, and investment forums at UNGA to promote the continent’s strategic interests and ensure Africa’s voice is more visible in global governance.
