BREAKING: Ga Traditional Council Opposes Planned Igbo Day and New Yam Festival in Accra
The Ga Traditional Council has raised concerns over a planned event titled β2025 Ibo Day in Ghana/New Yam Festivalβ scheduled for Sunday, September 21, 2025, at the Efua Sutherland Childrenβs Park in Accra.
According to the Council, the festival, organized by Igbo leader Eze Dr. Amb. Chukwudi Jude Ihenetu, poses potential risks to peace and security within the Ga State.
In a statement on Saturday, the Council recalled an earlier press release issued on July 9, 2025, which cautioned Dr. Ihenetu against holding traditional and cultural festivities under what it described as βthe guise of importing Igbo culture into Ga land.β
The Council stressed that while it acknowledges Ghanaβs multicultural community, no ethnic or cultural group is permitted to stage festivals or public traditional celebrations within the Ga State without prior consultation and approval from the Ga Mantse and elders.
HRM King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II has therefore requested immediate intervention by the relevant authorities to halt the scheduled event and ensure order within the Ga State.
The directive adds to a series of measures taken by the Council to safeguard the cultural integrity of the Ga people and maintain peace during the festive calendar of the Ga State.
