The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially released the results of the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates across Nigeria and other participating countries.
A total of 1,969,313 candidates sat for the examination between April and June 2025, out of 1,973,365 registered students from 23,554 secondary schools. The examination also included candidates from schools in Benin Republic, Côte d’Ivoire, and Equatorial Guinea who followed the Nigerian curriculum.
In a statement released by WAEC, the council revealed that only 38.32% of candidates obtained five credits including English and Mathematics, marking a significant decline from the 72.12% recorded in 2024. However, 87.24% of candidates obtained at least five credits in five subjects, with or without English and Mathematics.
WAEC attributed the drastic drop in performance to new anti-malpractice measures introduced in the 2025 examination cycle, including the serialisation of objective papers in key subjects like Mathematics, English Language, Biology, and Economics.
The council also disclosed that results of 262,803 candidates (13.34%) are being withheld pending investigations into examination malpractice, while 192,089 candidates had their results completely withheld due to confirmed cases of cheating.
WAEC noted that 1,517,517 candidates’ results (77.06%) have been fully processed and released, while 451,796 results (22.94%) are still being processed due to errors and other technical issues.
