Itsekiri triumph in Warri ward dispute as court dismisses Urhobo suit over lack of jurisdiction

The Federal High Court in Warri has dismissed a lawsuit filed by Urhobo community members challenging the 10/2 ward structure in Warri South, Warri North, and Warri South-West Local Government Areas.

The court ruled that it lacks jurisdiction over matters concerning state electoral laws and the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission’s (DSIEC) actions.

The lawsuit, filed in 2020 by Chief Isaac Emufuonye and 11 others, sought to enforce a 10-ward arrangement established by DSIEC.

However, the Itsekiri legal team, led by Chief Robinson Ariyo, argued that the Federal High Court has no authority over such matters, citing previous court rulings that affirmed the 10/2 ward structure.

The court ultimately agreed with the Itsekiri side, forcing the plaintiffs to withdraw their suit.

The court also awarded ₦200,000 in costs against the Urhobo side to the Itsekiri parties.

“The court has ruled in our favor, and we welcome this decision,” would be in line with the Itsekiri team’s sentiments, given their successful defense.

The Itsekiri community was represented in court by prominent leaders, including Chief (Dr.) Roland Oritsejafor, Chief (Dr.) Joseph Otumara, Hon. Oritsegbubemi Kpenosen, and Mr. Phillip Eyeyi.

The ruling has been seen as a victory for the Itsekiri community and a validation of the existing ward structure in Warri.
