Family feud: DNA test sought to settle paternity dispute over late Oyo governor’s estate

A former governor’s family is embroiled in a bitter dispute over inheritance, with one daughter seeking a DNA test to determine the biological relationship between her siblings and their late father, Otunba Christopher Adebayo Alao-Akala.

The suit, filed at the Oyo State High Court, asks for a DNA test on seven individuals claiming to be biological children of the deceased.

“The tests be conducted at a court-approved, accredited laboratory to determine their true biological relationship with the late Governor,” the motion read.

Mrs. Oluwatoyin Alao-Aderinto, the first daughter, is also seeking an order for the exhumation of her father’s body for the DNA test.

“The results of the tests should be filed under a sealed envelope and delivered directly to the presiding Judge for pronouncement in open court,” she pleaded.

The family feud centers around the vast estate left behind by the late politician, which includes properties in Nigeria, the UK, and the US. Alao-Aderinto’s counsel, Oladipo Olasope (SAN), warned that excluding her from the administration of the estate “violated both moral norms and legal rights.”

The dispute began when another daughter, Kemi Alao-Akala, and Olamide Alabi obtained a Letter of Administration without Alao-Aderinto’s knowledge or consent. Alao-Aderinto claims this was a deliberate exclusion that contravenes Nigerian law.

“There is no consensus on the paternity of these persons, and the inclusion of some and exclusion of others in the administration of the deceased’s estate raises troubling questions of authenticity and equity,” Olasope said,
