Reports say the Directorate of Security Services (DSS) has discovered 18 ‘Ghana-must-go’ bags containing money and documents at the residence of Godwin Emefiele, the suspended governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
Following an extensive search of the property that lasted about a day, the money and documents were seized from Emefiele’s Lagos home on Friday afternoon.
Emefiele, who was arrested by the DSS on June 10, has been in the agency’s custody for eight days.
Investigations into Emefiele’s actions during his tenure at the nation’s apex bank are still on-going, suggesting that his stay in DSS custody may be longer than initially anticipated.
Additionally, it has been revealed that the DSS obtained a court order on Thursday, granting them permission to detain the former CBN chief for three weeks, and there are indications that his detention may be extended beyond that period.
On Thursday, Emefiele was reportedly transferred from DSS custody in Abuja to Lagos, where his residence was searched by DSS operatives.
After the conclusion of the search, approximately 18 ‘Ghana-must-go’ bags containing currency and documents were taken away the following day, Friday.
Emefiele was flown back to Abuja on Friday afternoon, accompanied by the bags, and investigators have resumed questioning him, particularly regarding the findings.
It was further reported that the secret police are currently conducting a manhunt for Emefiele’s personal assistant (name withheld) in relation to the revelations that have emerged in the course of the on-going investigation.
“DSS took Emefiele to his house in Lagos on Thursday and returned him to Abuja on Friday afternoon. His house was searched. They took away about 18 big Ghana-must-go bags containing money and documents from the house.
“His personal assistant is on the run. DSS is on a manhunt for him. He is the key to unlock Emefiele’s assets and wealth stashed away within and outside the country,” a source told Nigerian Tribune.
It will be recalled that President Bola Tinubu, on June 9, suspended Emefiele as CBN governor and ordered his probe, following which he was arrested by the DSS for investigation.
