A report has surfaced, accusing the former former Director-General of the State Security Service (SSS), Yusuf Magaji Bichi, of gross mismanagement and unprofessional conduct during his tenure.

Bishi was replaced with Adeola Ajayi by President Tinubu as he tendered his resignation few days ago.

According to sources within the agency, Bichi’s leadership was marked by a series of questionable decisions, including lowering recruitment standards and bypassing multi-layer screening processes. This led to the hiring of unqualified personnel, some of whom allegedly couldn’t even pass basic aptitude tests.

Further allegations suggest that Bichi favored recruits from “Cotonou,” a term used to describe individuals with questionable educational credentials.

However, this practice, insiders claim, compromised the agency’s integrity and effectiveness.

Bichi’s tenure was also marred by accusations of nepotism, with select retired directors having their tenure extended, thereby stifling career advancement for other deserving officers.

Perhaps most egregious, however, were the allegations surrounding Bichi’s family members. His wife, sources claim, wielded significant influence over recruitment, promotion, and discipline within the agency, often misusing public funds for personal gain. Her behavior, described as “oppressive” and “extravagant,” included traveling with a large motorcade and harassing motorists.

Bichi’s son, Abah Bichi, former eaglet football player, was accused of flaunting his wealth on social media, showcasing a fleet of luxury cars purchased with public funds.

He also allegedly used SSS operatives for personal security at public events.

The new Director-General of the SSS is facing mounting pressure to address these allegations and restore the agency’s reputation. Calls are growing for a comprehensive overhaul of the service, including a review of detainee cases and a commitment to professionalism and accountability.
