In his acceptance speech, Soyinka emphasized the deep cultural connections between Cuba and the Yoruba people of Nigeria.
He said, “I grew up listening to Cuban music, in those days when there were gramophones, when there was no electricity.
“This has been a wonderful way to bring me back and remind me that Cuba is also my home. And it is proof that Yoruba is everywhere here, and that completes the spiritual aspect of people like me.”
He noted that his upbringing was influenced by Cuban music, even in the absence of modern technology.
Soyinka expressed his gratitude for the honor, stating that it not only recognizes his literary contributions but also acknowledges the shared values of liberation and justice that unite Cuba and the Yoruba people.
The Cuban President described Soyinka’s visit as “very significant,” highlighting his commitment to fighting for just causes. Soyinka’s remark, “Yoruba is everywhere,” underscores the global presence and influence of Yoruba culture, transcending geographical boundaries.
