The Nigerian Senate has confirmed Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche as the Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS).

The confirmation came after the Senate Committee on Interior, led by Senator Adams Oshiomhole, presented its report on Nwakuche’s nomination.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio urged Nwakuche to use his office to address the recurring issue of jailbreaks in the country.

“To whom much is given, much is expected. I hope that his appointment will bring an end to jailbreak,” Akpabio said.

Nwakuche’s appointment was initially nominated by President Bola Tinubu, who emphasized that the nomination was made in compliance with Section 3(1)(b) of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) Act, 2019.

As the new Comptroller-General, Nwakuche faces the immediate challenge of strengthening custodial security nationwide and implementing systemic reforms to address the chronic issue of awaiting-trial inmate backlogs.
