Video: Scores of Katsina youths arrive Lagos in search of jobs at Dangote refinery

A large group of young men in large contingent has arrived Lagos from Katsina State in search of job opportunities at the Dangote Refinery located in Ibeju-Lekki.

According to a video posted by a Facebook user, Kunle Joo Odewunmi, obtained by The Yoruba Times, the youths claimed to be Nigerians from Katsina state, and presented their National Identification Number (NIN) cards as proof of their identity.

The Dangote Refinery, one of the largest refineries in the world, has been a magnet for job seekers from across the country.

The refinery, owned by Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day and a 900 KTPA Polypropylene plant.

The arrival of these youths from Katsina State has sparked mixed reactions among Lagosians and social media users. While some have expressed concerns about potential security risks, others have sympathized with the youths’ quest for employment.

In the video, the youths expressed their determination to secure jobs at the refinery, citing the need for employment and better living conditions.

This development shows the challenges of unemployment and migration in Nigeria, especially the northern part of the country as young people from different parts of the country seek better opportunities in South West region.

The Dangote Refinery began production in January 2024, following a series of delays and a long construction period.

The refinery was officially inaugurated by then-President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.

As the youths continue to wait for opportunities at the refinery, their presence in Lagos has raised questions about the impact of migration on local communities.
