UNILAG CLARIFIES STUDENT FEE ADJUSTMENTS, SAYS NO NEW INCREASE IMPLEMENTED

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has denied reports suggesting a fresh hike in tuition or service charges for undergraduate students, explaining that recent changes visible on the student portal were due to a new directive from the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFund).

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, Head of the University’s Communication Unit, said the observed adjustments only reflect the integration of previously approved faculty and departmental dues into the central payment system.

According to her, the consolidation was mandated by NELFund to ensure that all student payments are made through a single verified portal, eliminating multiple or informal payments at various administrative levels.

“This ensures that once students make payment through their official portal, no other payment will be collected at the faculty or departmental levels,” Alaga-Ibraheem explained.

The clarification followed concerns raised by students on Tuesday after noticing fee changes on their online portals, which many interpreted as another upward review of charges.

A review of payment advice documents by TheCable confirmed that while total amounts appeared different, the underlying components represented dues already approved in earlier sessions, now merged for transparency and compliance purposes.
