A major step is being taken toward the international recognition of Oyo, one of the most significant cities in Yoruba civilization, as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
An international conference titled “OYO: The City of Yoruba Cultural Heritage” is scheduled for Monday, June 29, 2026, in Salvador da Bahia, Brazil. The event will be led by His Imperial Majesty, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade I, the Alaafin of Oyo, along with his entourage.
The ceremony will feature representatives from the Nigerian and Brazilian governments, UNESCO officials, partner universities, and cultural institutions.
The conference will celebrate the historical, cultural, and spiritual legacy of Oyo, reinforcing the transatlantic connection between Yoruba heritage and Brazil. The event is expected to pave the way for Oyo’s formal recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
