Following posts on social media platforms, casting aspersions on the Yorùbá, Dr. Segun Showunmi, a PDP chieftain in Ogun State has tendered apologies.
Showunmi had made a post via his official X handle on Feb 25, 2024, sharing a post with a video attached, stating “We have created a mess! Shame on the Yorubas! What a shameless race. You will hardly see Igbos begging for food! Ndi Igbo Anayo Ego. How did the Yorubas become this? We must rework the developmental framework of the South-West! I am ashamed, to say the least, shameful.”
Majority of the responses to the post on X (formerly known as Twitter) were backlashes, but he remained steadfast.
On February 26, 2024, a day after the initial post, he published a second video-sharing post, stating “Look at what sensible people are doing while a bunch of retards are screaming ebi n pawa o. Their very useless e-rats are abusing their fathers, not me. Awolowo must be crying in his grave! Very useless fools. Disgraceful lot.”
He later issued an apology and retraction in several messages made through his official X handle after receiving criticisms.
He wrote: “@AKakanfo Dear Yorubas, gbogbo omo kaaro ojiire! I am very sorry and I apologize most profusely that my words were harsh and insensitive to our people. Do forgive me. Ko ma ba baje ni. I was just so upset seeing the ugly event. I am sorry. Omode ki n mo eko je ko ma ra lowo.”
He made another separate post apologizing, and wrote: “Dear Yorubas, gbogbo omo kaaro ojiire! I am very sorry and I apologize most profusely that my words were harsh and insensitive to our people. Do forgive me. Ko ma ba baje ni. I was just so upset seeing the ugly event. I am sorry. Omode kin mo eko je ko ma ra lowo. Ema binu.”
Many, however, have criticised his apologies, labelling them as fake and questioning why he hasn’t removed the posts for which he has been expressing regrets.
As of the time of reporting, he has refused to delete the earlier posts.
