Tshwane Mayor, Dr. Nasiphi Moya, has stated that spazas in the region are strictly for locals

Her recent post has sparked a national conversation with the an indirect statement that foreigners will not be allowed to register spaza shops in her city.

The statement comes after the South Africa President, Cyril Ramaphosa, called for local store owners to register their businesses within 21 days, following the tragic deaths of 22 children who consumed contaminated food from spaza shops.

Mayor Moya took to her X page to sympathize with the victims, stating that the there would be announcement of spaza shops registration in the next few days.

She wrote, “One by one, Tshwane, we will be announcing the registration process for the spaza shop in the next few days. Here in Tshwane, spazas are strictly for locals!”.

This stance has garnered significant attention, with many South Africans supporting her conservative position amidst growing concerns about foreign involvement in the informal economy.

Spaza shop registrations have commenced in the country, with the Tshwane Metro Police inspecting shops, verifying documents, and removing expired food items.

Users have applauded Mayor Moya’s stance, seeing it as a major victory for local businesses struggling in a competitive industry.

The ActionSA mayor has consistently backed laws prioritizing South Africans’ access to economic opportunities.

As the registration deadline approaches, the Government urges shop owners to apply promptly. With the country’s informal economy under scrutiny.
