A tragic incident has shaken the architectural community in Nigeria with the murder of renowned architect, Engr. Asomba Andrew Egbuonu.

The popular engineer is a fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (FNIA).

Egbuonu, based in Port Harcourt, was killed by unknown gunmen in Nnewi, Anambra State, just four days before his mother’s burial.

According to Chike Chamberlain Ibeanu, General Secretary of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA), Egbuonu was finalizing arrangements for his mother’s burial when he fell victim to the attack. In a statement, Ibeanu said:

“Distinguished colleague, it is with a painful and heavy heart that I announce the death of our brother, Arc. Asomba Andrew Egbuonu FNIA, KSJ. He died on Sunday, November 17, 2024, following complications from gunshot wounds sustained after being attacked by yet-to-be-identified gunmen near our hometown of Nnewi.”

Egbuonu was heading home to conclude preparations for his mother’s burial, scheduled for Thursday, November 21, 2024, when the incident occurred.

The Nigerian Institute of Architects has lost a distinguished member, and the community is mourning the loss of a talented professional.

The circumstances surrounding Egbuonu’s death are still unclear, and authorities are urged to investigate and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Egbuonu’s contributions to the field of architecture will be deeply missed, and his legacy will be remembered by colleagues and friends. Condolences pour in for the bereaved family, particularly during this difficult time of double loss.
