Oyo Assembly Condemns Doctors, Nurses’ Negligence of Duty

September 7, 2023 2 min read

The Oyo State House of Assembly has berated doctors and nurses for negligence of duty.

The house mentioned the instance of a victim, Mrs Susan Babatunde, whose death was as a result of negligence of a doctor at the General Hospital, Ogbomosho, as among others happening in public hospitals in the state that were usually swept under the carpet.

The assembly also lamented that the usual routine inspection of medical care providers in the state hospitals and issuance of sanctions against those found wanting seemed to have become a thing of the past.

The assembly added that the constant abuse of professionalism and imperativeness of adequate care had made many lose confidence in public hospitals such that they now sought solutions to their health challenges elsewhere.

This, the House noted, even made people fell victim to fake online doctors and those who advertised dangerous herbal concoctions.

The Assembly, however, directed its Committee on Health to invite the chairman and permanent secretary of the state’s Hospital Management Board to investigate the circumstances that led to the death of Mrs Susan Babatunde.

Meanwhile, the Assembly, on Wednesday, confirmed the nominations of Miss Wasilat Adegoke and Dr Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi as commissioners by Governor Seyi Makinde.

The commissioners-designates were not subjected to grilling as the Leader of the House, Honourable Sanjo Adedoyin argued that Makinde could not be wrong with his nomination, having proved his ability to hunt for talents.

Similarly, Speaker of the Assembly, Honourable Adebo Ogundoyin held that the duo needed not to be subjected to questioning as they were freshly being brought on board.
