Owa Ijesha picked Oyin-honey

January 29, 2025 4 min read

Former Redeem Pastor, now OBA Clement Adesuyi Haastrup of Ijeshaland, his eyes blindfolded picked Oyin among several items including hot peper

What it means in Yoruba tradition

In IJESA tradition and culture, Owa Obokun Adimula will be presented with three calabash bowls. He is expected to select one out of these calabash bowls. The process is so secretive and exclusive and will be conducted in the most classified ritual procedures. His eyes will be covered with white garment and he will pick his choice from the three calabash bowls.

In Oba Clement ADESUYI HAASTRUP case, one of the calabashes contained Pepper, another contained salt and the third contained ‘Oyin’, otherwise called Honey in English language.

What is inside each of the calabashes has great significance that follows the history and nature of the reigns of the King. But, no King ever would wish to choose the calabash that contains pepper, because that’s a very bad omen.

At about a quarter to eleven, Alaye arrived Ile Orisa with the Orisa Alaye in a cult procession by the initiated male descendants of Alaye.

Immediately after the arrival of Alaye, the Agba and Agbaagba Ijesas arrived and sat at Erungeru. Oba Clement ADESUYI HAASTRUP left Bajimo House and followed the traditional route in the Atakumosa Market into the Palace Civic Center through Idi Aralu. At Idi Aralu, he observed some rites and then walked straight to Erungeru where he performed the mandatory obeisance by prostrating three times before the Agbaagba Ijesas. From that moment henceforth, it becomes a taboo for him to prostrate before anyone again in his life.
The Agba Ijesas then return same respect and gesture by prostrating before him one after the other. After completing all other mandatory exercises, Oba Clement ADESUYI HAASTRUP was led into Ile Orisa by Alaye, OBALORO, Petelua and other Orisa devotees.

The exercise in the Ile Orisa lasted more than four hours in exclusive and secretive ways. However, according to one of the Orisa devotees, named “Amero”, Kabiyesi’s eyes were covered with white garment and he was asked to choose one out of the three calabash bowls. The one that he picks is the one that will determine the nature, type and duration of his reign as the Owa Obokun Adimula and living reincarnation of Owa Obokun Ajibogun Orunaja Aganniyeye Ekun. The calabash is usually mounted on the traditional Orisa tray and surrounded by the initiated male descendants of Alaye.

Kabiyesi, Owa Ajimoko 111 emerged from Ile Orisa at some few minutes to 4 AM carrying his chosen calabash bowl in his hand. Meanwhile, Ogboni Ijebu Jesa was seated in front of Ile Orisa waiting for the new Owa Obokun Adimula. Ogboni Ijebu Jesa then opened the calabash bowl in Owa’s hand and behold it contains ‘oyin’. This signifies Good Tidings in Odu Ifa as explained by Petelua and OBALORO. According to them, “Honey is a treasure and should treated as such”. It was explained that honey is a feminine energy that’s social and loved by everyone….’a mi n fi Oyin s’enu tu ito”. “Didun didun la n ba ile Oyin “.
Honey can never be spoken bad of, it has superior medicinal purposes and has the ability to cure all things of life spiritual and otherwise.

Thus, in Ifa’s ancient wisdom, honey is often used in sacrifices to achieve great success and prosperity in life.

Oba Ajimoko then sat on the laps of Ogboni Ijebu Jesa who then gave him a new name, “Akorede”. In Ogboni Ijebu Jesa’s words, “Igba Oyin lo gbe, Kabiyesi Owa Obokun Adimula, e ti di Akorede, o ti ko ire owo, ire omo, ire alaafia, ire aiku, ire oun mere-mere wo Ile Ijesa”.

From today, Kabiyesi Owa Obokun Adimula of IJESALAND, Oba Clement ADESUYI HAASTRUP, Owa Akorede, Ajimoko 111, begins his mandatory traditional 90 Days in Ogboni Ilesa House, and this is called IPEBI. There in Ogboni Ilesa House, Owa Obokun Adimula can perform all the functions of Owa Obokun without any hindrance.
