The Oba of Lagos, His Royal Majesty Oba Rilwan Akiolu, has faulted the claim by former President of the United States, Donald Trump, that Christians are being killed in Nigeria.

Akiolu described the statement as incorrect, misleading, and capable of creating unnecessary tension, saying it misrepresents the true situation in the country and unfairly portrays Nigeria before the international community.

The traditional ruler made the remarks on Sunday at his palace in Lagos while speaking to journalists shortly after marking his 82nd birthday anniversary.

Oba Akiolu, a respected monarch and former senior police officer, said Nigerians of different faiths have coexisted peacefully for decades despite the nation’s security challenges.

He noted that both Christians and Muslims have continued to live together harmoniously, sharing communities, celebrations, and even hardships, adding that such peaceful relationships remain the strength of Nigeria’s unity.

According to him, acts of criminality, banditry, and terrorism witnessed in some parts of the country are not targeted at any religion but are perpetrated by misguided individuals and groups pursuing selfish interests.

The monarch urged foreign leaders and commentators to always seek accurate information before making statements about Nigeria, emphasizing that inflammatory remarks could worsen misunderstandings and distort the country’s image abroad.

While calling for stronger efforts to address insecurity and promote justice, Oba Akiolu reaffirmed that Nigeria’s diversity should be seen as a source of strength rather than division.
