Nigerian activist, Omoyele Sowore, who is also the convener of the #RevolutionNow movement, has been arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on Sunday.

Sowore had just arrived from the United States, where he had been with his family.

The arrest was not unexpected, as SaharaReporters had earlier reported that the DSS had instructed airport security and immigration authorities to intercept and detain Sowore upon his arrival in Nigeria. The directive was issued by the newly appointed DSS Director General, Adeola Ajayi, due to Sowore’s role in the recent #EndBadGovernance protests.

Sowore had been vocal about his plans to return to Nigeria and continue his activism, despite the threat of arrest.

In a recent interview, he revealed that he had received credible intelligence that his name had been submitted to airport security personnel by the DSS Director General.

The arrest has sparked outrage among human rights activists and supporters of Sowore, who see it as a clear attempt to silence dissenting voices in Nigeria.
