The National Assembly has passed the South West Development Commission (SWDC) Bill, paving the way for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s final approval.
The bill, which underwent its third reading, was approved following a report submitted by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Special Duties, Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan.
The SWDC aims to accelerate economic and social development in Nigeria’s South West region, comprising six states: Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ekiti, and Ondo.
According to lawal, “If the commission is established through presidential assent, it will like other development-driven commissions receive funds from the federation account, donations from development partners, etc, to address infrastructural deficits and tackle ecological problems in the region”.
The bill was read for second time in February 2024.
President Tinubu’s approval will establish the SWDC as a federal agency, enabling it to receive funding and implement projects tailored to the region’s needs.
This development is expected to bring significant benefits to the South West region, boosting economic growth, job creation, and improved living standards.
