New Tax Laws Must Be Implemented From Jan. 1, 2026 – Tinubu Tells Nigerians

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed that the newly enacted tax laws, including those that took effect on June 26 and others scheduled to commence on January 1, 2026, will be implemented as planned, Newday Reporters have confirmed.

The President made this known in a statement issued on Tuesday, where he described the tax reforms as a historic, once-in-a-generation opportunity to establish a fair, competitive, and resilient fiscal framework for Nigeria.

According to Tinubu, the reforms are aimed at laying a strong foundation for sustainable economic growth and improving the efficiency of the country’s revenue system. He stressed that the new tax laws are not intended to increase the tax burden on Nigerians but to restructure and modernise the fiscal architecture of the nation.

“The reforms represent a once-in-a-generation opportunity to build a fair, competitive, and robust fiscal foundation for our country,” the President said.
He further explained that the primary objective of the tax laws is to reset the fiscal system, promote harmonisation across tax structures, safeguard human dignity, and strengthen the social contract between the government and citizens.

“The tax laws are not designed to raise taxes, but rather to support a structural reset, drive harmonisation, and protect dignity while strengthening the social contract,” Tinubu added.

Sources close to the Presidency disclosed to Newday Reporters that the President has appealed to key stakeholders to rally behind the implementation phase of the reforms, noting that the process has now moved decisively into the delivery stage.

“I urge all stakeholders to support the implementation phase, which is now firmly in the delivery stage,” the President was quoted as saying.

Tinubu also acknowledged the ongoing public debate and concerns surrounding alleged amendments to certain provisions of the recently enacted tax laws.

However, he maintained that no substantial issue has been identified that would justify suspending or disrupting the reform process.

“No substantial issue has been established that warrants a disruption of the reform process,” the President stated.

He emphasised his administration’s commitment to due process and respect for the integrity of laws duly passed by the National Assembly, noting that trust in governance is built through consistent and well-considered decisions rather than hasty or reactive actions.
