The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has dismantled a Nigerian-Mexican drug cartel allegedly operating a clandestine methamphetamine laboratory in Eziama community, Obeagu, Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State.
Two suspected kingpins, 45-year-old Chukwu Obumneme Christopher, also known as Brown, and 60-year-old Chukwu Georginus Monday, alias George, were arrested over their alleged involvement in the operation alongside a Mexican cartel member, Rodriguez Villanueva, who is based in Mexico City.
The suspects were arraigned before the Federal High Court in Enugu on a five-count charge bordering on conspiracy, organising, managing and financing a drug trafficking organisation, as well as unlawful possession of precursor chemicals used in methamphetamine production. Their trial has been scheduled for October 21, 2026.
NDLEA said its investigation uncovered large quantities of precursor chemicals and equipment at the clandestine laboratory, including hundreds of litres of methylamine, isopropyl alcohol, hydrochloric acid, acetone and other substances used in methamphetamine production.
Three other suspects, including Villanueva, were named in the charge and remain at large. NDLEA Chairman Mohamed Buba Marwa said the agency would continue efforts to track down all suspects linked to the cartel and ensure they face the law.
