The Muhammadu Buhari International Airport in Maiduguri, Borno State, has been upgraded to an international airport, with plans to commence full international operations by January 1, 2025.

This development is expected to boost economic growth and promote accessibility for all regions in the country.

According to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, the airport’s upgrade is strategic for receiving international flights from the Middle East into Nigeria, given its capacity, size, population, and infrastructure. Keyamo described North East Nigeria, particularly Borno State, as a commercial city that connects Nigeria with other countries.

Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State expressed satisfaction with the airport’s new status and commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Minister of Aviation for the transformation in the aviation sector. Zulum assured that the North East governors will provide the necessary political will to ensure the smooth operation of the airport.

The upgrade is positioned to enhance connectivity for the North East Zone and strengthen Maiduguri’s role in international air travel and cargo transportation.² With its world-class runway and state-of-the-art facilities, the airport will also serve as a regional cargo hub.
