Dr. Basiru, former spokesperson of the Senate, has called upon the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, to initiate an investigation into accusations made against him.
It was alleged that Basiru brought unauthorized police personnel to the state with the intention of disturbing public order.
A letter dated June 20, 2023, and signed by Othuke Amata, the legal representative of Ajibola Basiru, was obtained in Osogbo on Friday.
In the letter addressed to the Inspector-General of Police, the counsel to the ex-Senate spokesperson referred to a recent statement made by Olawale Rasheed, spokesperson of the Governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke.
Rasheed accused Basiru and the Nigerian Police Force of unlawfully bringing policemen into the state in order to create chaos, turmoil, and disrupt the peace.
Rasheed also alleged that Basiru had provided a list of prominent leaders from the Peoples Democratic Party and the Osun State government, whom he wanted to get arrested on false charges.
Given the gravity of these allegations, Basiru requested a thorough investigation to address any concerns that may have arisen regarding the police and his own reputation.
The letter partly read, “It is against this background that we consider these allegations weighty enough to warrant a thorough investigation by the Nigerian Police, who in this instance were specifically mentioned and subtly referred to by the Osun State Government to be in cahoots with our client to destabilise Osun State.
“This investigation, as stated by our client, is necessary to allay the fear that might have been created in the minds of unsuspecting citizens of the State that the Nigerian Police is partisan and also that our client is a man given to violence.
“We, therefore, at the instance of our client, humbly request that you use your good office to direct an immediate investigation into this weighty allegation of a planned invasion of Osun State with unauthorised police operatives by our client.”
