Aare Gani Adams Calls For Regionalism For Nigeria To Progress

June 12, 2023 1 min read

Aareonakakanfo of Yoruba land, Iba Gani Adams, called upon President Bola Tinubu on Monday to fulfill the aspirations of a prosperous Nigeria, stating that the late MKO Abiola’s mandate symbolizes justice, freedom, equity, liberty, and the preservation of democratic principles.

Adams made these remarks during the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of June 12, 1993, in Ogba, Lagos. He asserted that the demise of MKO Abiola was not in vain, as democracy has become entrenched in the country.

He acknowledged that there are challenges that have jeopardized the foundations of this democracy, but believes that things can improve with the right approach.

Adams expressed, “We cannot achieve significant progress if our democracy remains bound by the current 1999 constitution in Nigeria. The 1979 and 1999 constitutions were imposed upon us by the military to protect their wrongdoings. These constitutions have consistently been the cause of Nigeria’s troubles, which is why we find ourselves in the current situation.”

“Unless we embrace regionalism and allow each federating unit to develop at its own pace, Nigeria may struggle to realize its ambitious goals. With a new administration in power, President Bola Tinubu must formulate a policy direction that prioritizes the welfare of the people.”
