Gowon Urges ECOWAS Unity Amidst Threat of Member States’ Exit

February 22, 2024 2 min read

In an impassioned plea for sub-regional cohesion, former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, has urged leaders of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to prioritize peace and unity over discord.

Addressing the simmering tensions within the bloc, Gowon called upon the heads of state and government, as well as the aggrieved nations of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger Republic, to set aside their differences for the greater good of the region.

Gowon, a revered figure in Nigerian history, conveyed his message through an open letter delivered to Dr. Alliou Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission.

He implored the leaders to engage in dialogue, emphasizing the imperative nature of unity and stability in realizing the aspirations of the founding fathers.

Expressing his concern over recent developments, Gowon highlighted the significance of ECOWAS in fostering regional integration and achieving milestones in trade liberalization and peacekeeping efforts.

He lamented the potential ramifications of the threatened exits by Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, stressing the adverse impact on ordinary citizens who have benefited from the bloc’s initiatives.

Quoting from his letter, Gowon stated: “I urge the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, including the leaders of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, to put aside their differences and reunite for peace, stability, and prosperity of our sub-region.”

He further appealed for the lifting of sanctions imposed on member states and the withdrawal of notices to leave ECOWAS.

Reiterating the shared heritage and common goals of ECOWAS, Gowon urged regional leaders to convene a summit involving all 15 member states to chart a path forward for the community’s future.

He emphasized the moral responsibility of preserving unity within ECOWAS, calling upon other elders in the sub-region to join in the campaign for reconciliation.

In conclusion, Gowon reassured all parties of his readiness to facilitate further discussions to safeguard the unity and purpose of ECOWAS.

His heartfelt appeal underscores the urgency of addressing internal discord to uphold the integrity of the regional bloc and ensure continued progress towards collective prosperity.
