Èkìtì State Ministry of Agric, USDA, West Africa PRO-Cashew Project Establish Scion Garden and Polyclonal Cashew Demo Farm

Èkìtì State Ministry of Agric, in conjunction with United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) West Africa PRO-Cashew Project/McGeorge Consulting Limited, has successfully established a scion garden and Polyclonal Cashew Demo Farm in Èkìtì State.

This confers on the state the status of being the first sub-national to establish the first government-owned scion garden in Nigeria.

The state also facilitated the first polyclonal cashew demo farm.

Scion Garden is a new development in cashew value chain.

Cashew farmers are expected to switch to the use of grafted seedlings, rather than the use of seeds very soon.

Planting grafted seedling is the surest way to retain the exact traits of mother plants.

With this singular action, Èkìtì is on the right path and has been positioned to be one of the largest cashew producing states in a few years’ time.

Polyclonal cashew has the best quality and gives great yield to farmers.

The demo farm is to show farmers best practices on how to intercrop with cashew trees.
