EAGLES TRACKER: Unstoppable Moffi Grabs Historic 50th Ligue 1 Goal

Super Eagles attacker, Terem Moffi netted his 10th league goal of the season for OGC Nice in their 2-1 home loss to Moses Simon’s Nantes FC in a French Ligue One Matchweek 27 tie played yesterday.

Moffi who saw action for the entire 90 minutes, scored Nice’s equaliser in the 72nd minute after Matthis Abline’s 19th minute effort had put the visitors in the lead.

But Egypt international striker, Mostafa Mohamed, put Nantes back in the front from the penalty spot four minutes after Moffi’s goal and that was how the game ended.

For Moffi, yesterday’s strike was his fourth goal since returning from the AFCON.

Significantly, it is his 50th goal in the French top flight league.

His rating was 7.2. and he still has a chance of matching the 18 league goals he scored last season.

The 24-year-old Moffi has hit double digit goals three times in the past four seasons in France since he left FK Kortrijk of Belgium for Lorient in the 2020-21 season.

However, Nice’s poor form in the second round of the league season continued with the loss and they have slipped to the fifth with 43 points from 27 games while the away win bolstered Nantes’ determined effort to scale the relegation zone. They are in the 14th spot with 28 points.

OGC Nice must regroup quickly as they face Reims next on Sunday hoping to return to winning ways.

Elsewhere in Ligue 1,Lyon’s Gift Orban was available for 72 minutes for his ninth game of the season since his move from Gent in January, in their 1-1 home draw against Reims.

Orban had featured in Lyon’s back to back league wins over Lorient and Toulouse but he and his new team could not get the matchwinner against Reims as they remain 10th on the log with 35 points.

Lyon will travel to Nantes next on Sunday in another league game.

In Holland, China Akpom scored twice to help Ajax Amsterdam to a 3-1 away win over PEC Zwolle.

The Englishman who has pledged his allegiance to Nigeria has scored nine goals from 19 games.

Meanwhile, Rangers are back to the summit in Scotland after Cyriel Dessers netted his 13th goal of the season in a 3-1 home win over Hibernian.

Dessers, fresh from international duty with the Super Eagles in Morocco, put Rangers ahead at 2-1 with a first-half stoppage time header.

Rangers now have 73 points from 30 matches, two points ahead of bitter city rivals and defending champions Celtic.

Both rivals clash in the ‘Old Firm Derby’ next Sunday
