Bring on Elephants, Peseiro Boasts

Super Eagles’ coach, Jose Peseiro, is unfazed by the group opponents his side will face at the forthcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations In Ivory Coast, PUNCH Sports Extra has reported.

The three-time African champions will face hosts Ivory Coast, Equatorial Guinea and Guinea Bissau in Group A.

The 2023 AFCON will be played in Ivory Coast between January 13 and February 11 in 2024.

Speaking with PUNCH Sports Extra, the Portuguese coach expressed confidence his side had a chance of winning the tournament, despite drawn against tough opponents.

“We want to win the AFCON, so it’s not important to choose or want to avoid any opponent.

“The best moments are all those I was and I’m with my players, working to improve our organisation and our team spirit”, he said.

The Eagles last won the AFCON 10 years ago in South Africa and they defeated Ivory Coast in the quarter-final on the way to that triumph in 2013.

Hosts Ivory Coast are gunning for a third AFCON crown after they failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The Eagles were finalists when Ivory Coast last hosted the tournament 39 years ago.

In Group B, Egypt, Ghana, Cape Verde and Mozambique will compete for the two automatic spots while in Group C champions Senegal were drawn against Cameroon, Guinea and The Gambia.

Group D houses Algeria, Burkina Faso, Mauritania and Angola while in Group E Tunisia, Mali, South Africa and Nambia do battle.

Morocco, DR Congo, Zambia and Mali compete in Group F.
