The football world is in shock after the untimely death of Diogo Jota, the Liverpool forward and Portugal international, who passed away at the age of 28.

The news of his death comes just days after he celebrated a major milestone in his personal life, getting married to his partner, Rute Cardoso, on June 28.

According to reports from the Spanish sports newspaper MARCA, Jota died at the scene of an accident on Thursday.

The circumstances surrounding the incident are yet to be fully disclosed.

Born on December 4, 1996, in Porto, Portugal, Diogo JosΓ© Teixeira da Silva, popularly known as Diogo Jota, had risen through the football ranks with determination and flair.

He earned respect across Europe for his explosive performances and versatility in attack, playing as a right-footed attacker, left winger, or right winger.

Jota’s professional journey began in Portugal before he gained international acclaim. He joined Liverpool FC on September 19, 2020, from Wolverhampton Wanderers and became a crucial part of the Reds’ attacking options.

As of May 2025, his market value stood at €40 million, peaking at €60 million in December 2021. He had extended his Liverpool contract in August 2022, which was due to expire in 2027.

Throughout his career, Jota amassed an impressive record, making 398 club appearances across major competitions, scoring 136 goals, and providing 66 assists. In the Premier League, he played 190 matches, scoring 63 goals and registering 24 assists. His goal-scoring prowess was also evident in the UEFA Champions League (6 goals), Europa League (9 goals), and domestic cups.

The news of Jota’s death has sent shockwaves throughout the football world, with fans, teammates, and opponents mourning the loss of a talented young player who seemed to have his whole career ahead of him.
