BREAKING: Keir Starmer Set to Resign as UK Prime Minister

June 20, 2026 1 min read

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is officially set to resign from office, with several media reports indicating he will outline a resignation timetable on Monday after consulting with his wife and family today .

The development follows Andy Burnham’s resounding victory in the Makerfield by-election, which has intensified pressure on Starmer from within his own Labour Party . Multiple cabinet ministers are reportedly planning to tell him his “time is up” and push for what they describe as an “orderly transition” .

According to reports, around 100 Labour MPs are now calling for Starmer to step down, with Burnham’s camp reportedly compiling a list of nearly 200 MPs who will publicly call for the prime minister’s resignation and agree upon a transition period .

Starmer has previously stated that he would fight any leadership challenge, telling the BBC: “I was elected to serve my country with a mandate that we secured at a general election two years ago” . However, sources close to the prime minister have indicated his position is more “nuanced” privately .

The resignation would mark the end of Starmer’s tenure, which began with a landslide victory in July 2024 but has been plagued by declining popularity, policy missteps, and internal party dissent .
