BREAKING: Afenifere USA Honours Yoruba Scholar Barakat Fasasi with N1 Million Prize for Groundbreaking Research on Ibadan’s Plank Sellers History

February 22, 2026 2 min read

A brilliant Yoruba historian, Barakat Ayomide Fasasi, has been named the first recipient of the Afenifere North America Merit Award, receiving a N1 million prize for her outstanding research on the history of plank sellers in Ibadan.

Her Profile:
Barakat holds a Second Class Upper degree in History from the University of Ibadan, where she developed a deep passion for Social History, African History, and particularly Yoruba History. She is currently serving as an NYSC intern at KPMG Nigeria.

Her award-winning long essay, titled “The History of Plank Sellers’ Associations in Ibadan from 1950-2024,” investigated three major associations: Oke-Bola Plank Sellers Association, Bodija Plank Sellers Association, and Moniya Plank Sellers Association. The research explores:

· Historical background and political structures
· Economic practices and wood sourcing
· Social activities and internal/external challenges
· Impacts on Ibadan and Oyo State
· Collaboration with government agencies

The study addresses a significant knowledge gap in Oyo State’s timber industry, shedding light on an overlooked but vital economic sector.

Beyond academics, Barakat has demonstrated excellence in research and volunteerism, including serving as a volunteer for the Lagos Studies Association 2025 conference, where she helped organize the academic gathering.

She aspires to pursue postgraduate studies in African History and is open to international scholarships and collaborations. Her achievement stands as a testament to Yoruba intellectual excellence and the importance of documenting indigenous economic history.
