Another devastating incident has occurred on Saturday in Okija community, Anambra State, where a stampede broke out during a rice-sharing event, resulting in the loss of several lives.

The tragic event has sent shockwaves throughout the community, highlighting the dire economic struggles faced by many in the state.

According to eyewitnesses, a large crowd had gathered at the event, eager to receive free bags of rice.

The scene quickly turned chaotic as the crowd surged forward, resulting in a stampede that claimed the lives of several women.

A witness, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed sorrow over the incident, stating, “It’s a pity. Poverty is terrible. Assuming these women who met their untimely deaths were not poor, they would not have been there in the first place. God have mercy, and may their souls rest in peace. Amen.”

The authorities have not yet confirmed the exact number of casualties, but eyewitnesses report that several women lost their lives in the stampede.

The incident has raised widespread outrage and condemnation, with many calling for increased measures to address poverty and economic inequality in the state.

This tragic event comes on the heels of a similar incident in Ibadan, where a stampede occurred during a children’s Christmas party, resulting in the deaths of 35 children. The incidents have raised concerns about the safety and well-being of vulnerable populations, particularly during events and gatherings.

As the community comes to terms with the loss of life, many are calling for greater accountability and action to address the underlying issues that contributed to the tragedy. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for effective measures to address poverty, inequality, and economic injustice in the state.
