Crisis-hit Ekiti Wins Golf Gold in Asaba

September 26, 2023 2 min read

Despite the crisis that has rocked their camp at the 7th National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State, Ekiti State athletes are putting the issues behind as Abdulrahman Fatai won the first gold medal for the state in the golf event on Monday.

The lad recorded 30 points to edge Nasarawa and Adamawa to the gold medal.

Before Fatai’s gold, Team Ekiti had begun their campaign brilliantly as their table tennis players and female handball teams progressed in their events.

Kolade Bright also progressed in the female table tennis event on Monday after beating her counterpart from Bayelsa 2-0 in the knockouts.

Two of their female scrabble players are also through to the next round after a hard-fought victory in Round 1 on Monday.

They defeated PlaΒteau State 417-318 points and also ousted Ogun State by 355-348 points.

At the last Youth Games in Ilorin, Ekiti State set a new record with two gold, nine silver and two bronze medals to finish 16th in the table, their best outing ever at the event.

Ekiti has been in the news for the wrong reasons following their shabby dressing during the opening ceremony of the Youth Games on Saturday, which led to the Ekiti State House of Assembly summoning the officials in charge of sports in the state to appear before the House Committee on Youth and Sport at 2:00pm on Tuesday (today).

The state governor, Biodun Oyebanji also recalled the sports council boss Adekunle Adeyemi from Asaba to account for the poor dressing of the young athletes.
