Fifth Generation technology (5G) will further enable the digitisation of Nigeria’s economy, the Vice-President at Ericsson Middle-East and Africa, Hossam Kandeel, has said.
He revealed this to The PUNCH when the firm’s global leadership team visited the country recently.
He further stated that Information and Communication Technology was an enabler for economic development.
According to him, Nigeria was an important ICT market in sub-Saharan Africa and was sitting on a lot of capabilities in terms of talents and resources.
Kandeel said: “I think Nigeria is an extremely important market in Sub-Saharan Africa and it is really sitting on a lot of capabilities whether on people or resources, and the ICT industry is a big enabler of the development of the economy and the power of the people to help themselves to learn.
“I am happy that Nigeria launched 5G, last September, which is an extremely important milestone towards further enabling the digitisation of the economy.”
According to him, while Nigeria’s ICT sector was currently at a developed stage, the country’s ICT ambitions were never ending and would only lead to a further developed future.
Meanwhile, in a statement, Ericsson stated that the recent visit of its global delegation to the country was in line with its dedication to harnessing the power of connectivity and technology to drive digitalisation across the continent and support sustainable development and economic progress.
It stated that during the visit, it engaged in fruitful discussions with Nigeria’s communication service providers, stakeholders, and policymakers on pivotal topics in the country’s communication industry.
It added that it highlighted the role that connectivity plays in advancing the digital agenda of the country, as well as the potential of 5G, cloud computing, and Industry 4.0.
