Africa Climate Summit Kicks OffSeptember

September 4, 2023 2 min read

Africa is a few minutes away from the start of the inaugural African Climate Summit with the theme, “Driving Green Growth and Climate Finance Solutions for Africa and the World.”

This event, championed by the President of Kenya, William Ruto, brings together 24 heads of state and governments from Africa and beyond to the Kenyatta International Convention Centre, Nairobi, Kenya.

The summit aims to address the increasing exposure to climate change and its associated costs with a focus on Africa.

It would also serve as a platform to inform, frame, and influence commitments, pledges, and outcomes, ultimately leading to the development of the Nairobi Declaration.

Aside from the not-so-pleasant experiences many individuals experienced at the accreditation centres yesterday, all seems to be going well this morning.

Invited speakers to the opening session are the President of Kenya, William Ruto; the President of Comoros, Azali Assoumani, and the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, Simon Stiell.

Part of the highlight of today’s event is the opening session themed, “The Power of the Potential.”

This session sets the stage for ACS and African Climate Week and would showcase Africa’s potential in addressing climate challenges.

It also emphasises the need for a fairer financial system and highlights Africa’s position as it heads to the Conference of Parties 28, in the last week of November all to the early days of December.

Ruto arrived at the Tsavo Auditorium at exactly, 8:57am amid fanfare by the band.

Yesterday at the African Youth Climate Assembly, youths across African countries presented a copy of their declaration to the President Ruto.

Today, representatives of the youth and indigenous people groups will also present their declaration.
