2023 Census: preparations in Top Gear, Exercise to Hold Soon – NPC

Preparations for the 2023 population and housing census are on-going at the National Population Commission (NPC), even though the exact date of the census has not yet been determined.

Recently, the Chairman of the NPC, Hon. Nasir Isa Kwarra, met with a delegation from SDG Youth International at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss and receive support for the Commission’s Green Census program, which aims to incorporate environmentally friendly practices in the upcoming census. The delegation, led by Ifeanyi Uzoh, the National Representative for Nigeria and African Representative, donated assistance in the form of a 200kw Solar Energy System to support this initiative.

As part of its efforts, the NPC has also been conducting a series of census education programs. These programs are designed to provide enlightenment to Nigerians about the upcoming census in 2023. They cover topics such as the methodology and procedures involved in conducting the census, as well as how individuals can contribute to its successful implementation. The NPC recognizes the importance of public participation and is committed to ensuring that Nigerians are well-informed about the census process.

In partnership with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), the NPC has registered over 12 million children under the age of five who are eligible for enumeration during the census. The birth registration program aims to provide birth certificates for children, including their names and countries of origin, particularly in states where registration is yet to be completed.

The NPC is dedicated to recruiting temporary registrars at the community level and providing them with necessary registration materials. They are collaborating with local government leaders, traditional and religious leaders, and the community to emphasize the significance of birth registration. By working together, they aim to collect and analyze birth registration information at the local government and community levels, ultimately expanding the reach of birth registration across the nation.

Regarding the census enumeration process, the NPC announced that the training date for enumerators will be announced soon. The agency has developed comprehensive programs for the recruitment, training, and deployment of 786,741 ad hoc workers across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to conduct the census in 2023. These workers include enumerators, supervisors, data quality assistants, field coordinators, and data quality managers. The NPC has successfully recruited and trained teachers and professional staff, and training for accountants and supervisors at the local government level is yet to commence.

The NPC remains committed to carrying out a successful and accurate census in 2023 and continues to make progress in various aspects of the preparation process.
